SoSAFE was developed by Sexual Health and Family Planning ACT specifically for young people with intellectual disability and Autism spectrum
The SoSAFE program is:
- Evidence based
- Follows an explicit, rule-based format
- Is suitable for learners of all abilities
- Uses standardised concepts, symbols and visual lesson materials
- Complies with expert opinion on social safety program design
- Covers the outcomes from the mandatory Personal Development and Health syllabus for K-12
SoSAFE has been designed for young people who have an increased vulnerability to sexual and other forms of exploitation and abuse, in combination with an increased reliance and dependency on parents, carers and others. The use of this program cannot eliminate this vulnerability but can contribute to the prevention, detection, reduction and response to potential and actual abuse, exploitation and vulnerability.
The aim of the SoSAFE program is:
- To provide a simplified and ‘rule governed’ model of social reality
- To teach the type and degree of verbal and physical intimacy appropriate with different categories of people
- To provide visual communication tools for reporting physical and sexual abuse
