The Department of Education Assisted School Travel Program (ASTP) plays a significant role in meeting the needs of eligible students with disability by providing free specialised transport to and from school where parents and carers are unable to provide or arrange transport for the student either fully or in part.
Application Process
Applications for assisted transport are made through the school. Parents complete the Part A of the Assisted School Travel application form.
Assisted School Travel application form
The form must then be sent to the school and school completes Part B of the application and submits all necessary documentation to Assisted School Travel.
Parents are informed by Assisted School Travel of the outcome of the application.
Making changes
Any change of requirements to transport requires a form to be submitted to Assisted School Travel for assessment.
Changes include: -
- Change of residential address
- Increased/decrease of transport
- Change of transport address e.g. transport to grandparents
- Additional equipment e.g. walker, wheelchair
- Special purpose car seat or harness
Applications for a change in transport can take two weeks to process. To apply for a change to transport, contact the school.
Parent responsibility
The success of the program depends on the active cooperation of all people concerned - parents, teachers, contractors, drivers, Assisted Travel Support Officers (ATSOs) and ASTP staff - to ensure the best possible service for students.
The ASTP website provides information regarding parent responsibilities.
