Wellbeing
At our school, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn. Whether your child needs help with their mental, emotional, social or physical wellbeing, we are here to help them thrive at school and in daily life.
How we support student wellbeing
Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.
We do this through:
- teachers who help students feel welcome and included
- access to school counsellors, school psychologists and specialist staff
- programs that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour
- help for students who are new or changing year levels
- clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships
- staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
- developing health care plans for students
- open communication about wellbeing and support.

So Safe
The SoSAFE! Program is a set of visual and conceptual tools designed to promote social safety through a simplified rules-governed model of social reality. This program has been specifically designed for young people with autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability. At Arranounbai it is implemented across the school during weekly structured lessons specifically developed to meet the needs of varied age groups and levels of understanding. Students are introduced to concepts such as private and public places as well as private and public behaviours, in addition to learning the correct names for the private parts of the body. Through SoSAFE! students learn the type and degree of verbal and physical intimacy that is appropriate with different categories of people. The focus is on what is ‘OK’ and ‘Not OK’ with each category of people and who they can ask for help in situations when something is ‘Not OK’.
PBL
The Positive Behaviour for Engaged Learners (PBL) program is a whole-school approach that promotes a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment where all students can thrive. Focused around our school values of communicating, cooperating, and caring, PBEL teaches and celebrates positive behaviours that build strong relationships and engaged learners. The program provides clear expectations, consistent routines, and visual supports that help all students understand what positive behaviour looks like and feels like. Through explicit teaching, modelling, and regular recognition of positive choices, students learn how to express themselves effectively, work together respectfully, and show empathy and kindness toward others. PBEL encourages responsibility, resilience, and a sense of belonging, helping each child feel confident, valued, and ready to learn.

Wellbeing dog
Arranounbai participates in the Dogs Connect program. It is an evidence-based program that supports communities to ethically and sustainably integrate a wellbeing dog into schools. Theo, our lovely cocker spaniel, attends school two days a week and all students have the opportunity to interact with him. The presence of a wellbeing dog enhances emotional regulation and communication, increases engagement in learning by reducing self-consciousness and supports social learning and prosocial behaviours.
